Mental health problems can devastate lives. World Health Organisation research shows that 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year.

Through Hamlet Trust’s Network of over 40 partner organisations across the region, we have been able to help over 8,000 individuals to build better lives. Through setting up self-help, employment and advocacy projects, they are now living fulfilling lives, taking an active part in their communities.

In Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia the need is enormous. Wars and massive social and economic changes have made mental health problems a part of daily life for many people. There are few modern services in these countries and people have little choice but to enter the bleak psychiatric hospitals, relics of the Communist era. Imagine having to cope with all this on an income of less than $1US per day.

Leonid has experienced the mental health system in Ukraine. His story is typical:

Leonid, Friends' Union Ukraine "My life changed for the better when Hamlet Trust gave a grant to establish a local self-help group in Kyiv. We set up an employment project to renovate and redecorate flats and now I earn my living as an electrician. I’ve taken control of my life!"

What your money could achieve
  • £10 per month will pay an advocate to protect the rights of a vulnerable person
  • £20 per month enables a self-help group to meet regularly, helping up to 30 people to develop their self-confidence as they begin to live in the community after a long-term stay in a psychiatric hospital
  • £50 per month allows one person to be supported in a local employment project, giving him the skills and experience to take an active part in society
