Friends Union Community Centre, an NGO for people with mental health problems, is part of Social Development Support Agency (SDSA), the major purpose of which is to support civil society development through the improvement of the social protection system; to contribute to the creation of civil society through providing social services and co-ordinating the efforts of the state with NGOs in social areas, especially in mental health.
One of our main priorities is to work with users and ex-users of mental health services. Special emphasis is placed on supporting the creation of self-help groups and community centres for people with mental health problems.
We are open for users and ex-users, who want to communicate with other people with mental health problems. We try to create a supportive and secure space for communication and development for these people, their family members and professionals in this sphere, and also provide communal work methods and psychological aid. We try to help users to improve their social position, standard of living, inner state and interpersonal relations.
In recent months SDSA, in addition to all its previous activities, has been carrying out two new projects:
- The development of an employment project for members of Friends Union, the first of its kind in Ukraine.
- Advocacy of benefits reform.
We have also taken part in a number of international conferences, workshops and seminars; prepared issues of our magazine; created a video-film and produced a radio programme about our Centre.
